📍 Toronto, ON - It’s National Newspaper Week. This moment is an opportunity to recognize the important work newspapers and journalists do in their communities. Newspapers are a beacon of democracy and where readers can go to receive credible, trusted information in an era of fake news and misinformation. 

While we may not be considered a “traditional” newspaper publisher - OMG is a digital news source to more than 100,000 readers. We still respect and abide by the same standards traditional newspapers hold themselves to and take an extra duty of care when reporting on sensitive topics that carry impact. 

Our teams are made up of seasoned editors, reporters, producers, and creatives, all who have a background in the legacy news space and believe that a deeply local news source can help build a community. With click-bait headlines and rushed reporting, we’re slowing things down - going in depth on the stories that matter most to the communities we’re in.

While we acknowledge the vital role journalists play in our communities, I want to take a moment to share the harsh realities of their profession. With social media bullies and cancel culture running rampant, online hate and harassment has never been worse. 

So this is my open ask of all our readers: I urge you all to take a moment to remember there are humans behind the byline. While all journalists accept a level of responsibility and due diligence when reporting, they are at the mercy of a multitude of factors and human error does exist. 

We will always try to earn your trust with every story by delivering the best reporting possible but sometimes mistakes do happen. When they do, we will always own up to them. So before you type that tweet, email or comment, take a moment and consider the magnitude of your words and the weight they carry to a journalist. Your feedback is important to us, whether it is praise or constructive criticism, and we hope to continue hearing from you.
